Tributes flow for trailblazer

Carrying the coffin to the waiting hearse

Marlborough businessman John Marris was remembered at his funeral as a man who made sure a Blenheim firm built his new winery, even after it had been sold to multinational Lion Nathan, and who hired young men straight from school to work on his farms and gave them direction in their lives.

He was also a grandfather who could successfully teach his grandsons to behave well when rewarded with Minties.

About 300 people attended his funeral, held at the Church of the Nativity in Blenheim, on Saturday afternoon.

Mr Marris, 73, died at his home on January 26 after a long struggle with cancer.

Oldest son Brent Marris said it was the fourth time he had prepared a funeral speech, his father had declined and rallied in health so often.

“That’s the man he was – going on his own terms with all the boxes ticked.”

One of the last boxes to be ticked was to go to Leefield, and see the new vineyard planted by Brent Marris for his Marisco winery. Mr Marris said his father wanted to see the newly planted vines two weekends ago, and he was determined.

After debate, they drove him to the site, and the family sat together under a tree, drinking wine, and toasted the young vines. He died 24 hours later.

John Marris had put New Zealand on the world map for wine, he said, being the agent who had bought all the farmland that Montana planted the first commercial grapes on in 1973.

“He went the extra mile . . . At Pyne Gould Guinness, they called him ‘Rust’, because rust never sleeps.”

But it was for his commitment to family and friends that he was most remembered on Saturday afternoon.

Steve Wilkes talked about family holidays the Marris and Wilkes families took together, both families with six children.

“His ideas were always big and grand. Even on holiday, he dug the biggest holes in the sand to bury us or for us to bury him. He was just the most fun to be with.”

His grandchildren spoke of a man who would search all night with a torch to find a lost boomerang because it was important to the child, a grandfather who taught them to shoot and drive tractors, but most of all, who enjoyed spending time with them.

He knew how to make sure they learnt the manners grandmother Alison Marris wanted them to show while on holiday in Fiji – rewarding them with Minties when they were good.

Granddaughter Emma Marris, who is following in her father and grandfather’s viticultural footsteps, said the April holidays were spent in Marlborough for the vintage: “Marlborough, wine, Nan, and Granddad are inseparable in our minds.”

Business partner Phil Robinson said Mr Marris made sure Lion Nathan continued to use Robinson Construction to build the Wither Hills winery complex despite having sold the property before it was built.

Mr Robinson said Mr Marris took personal responsibility for the landscaping at the Westwood development, and he’d be there, jumping in and out of holes in his customary blue overalls, with his old white Nissan Bluebird parked nearby.

Marlborough Research Centre chief executive Gerald Hope said Mr Marris, the centre’s chairman for 30 years, was a modest man who achieved great things for the district.

Lake Conroe Home & Garden Show set for Feb. 8-9

The public is invited to attend the first-ever Lake Conroe Home and Garden Show slated for Feb. 8 and Feb. 9 at the Lone Star Convention Center in Conroe.

The event will feature 200 exhibits from experts in everything to organic gardening to interior design to custom outdoor spaces.

“We’re especially excited about the range of exhibitors, demonstrations and experts who’ll be part of this year’s show,” said Robyn Cade, President of RJC Productions and organizer of the Lake Conroe Home and Garden Show.

Show hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb, 8, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb 9.

Participants may be inspired to kick-start or finalize renovation plans with the help of design and renovation experts including: decorating, gardening, remodeling, window treatments, home theater, landscaping, kitchens baths, do-it-yourself, flooring, windows and doors, siding, heating and cooling, pools, outdoor entertainment and a myriad of other home-related products and services.

For those planning a major renovation or smaller home updates, the Lake Conroe Home Garden Show will provide the ability to comparison shop in one convenient area, find out how to make “green” improvements which can reduce electrical and heating bills, see the latest in home entertainment options, or see creative ideas to improve a home’s curb appeal.

Leslie Sarmiento, the principal designer with Decorating Den Interiors will be on hand to offer tips about how to incorporate radiant orchid, the color of the year into the home.

Lucy Harrell T.C.N.P., Organic Consultant and Specialty Landscape Designer for Toadstools Lawn, Garden and Gifts in Willis, will show how to build an organic program in a homeowner’s own yard. Harrell will do several talks and also be at the Toadstools exhibit area for questions.

DIY Expert and television celebrity Jason Cameron will be at the show on Saturday. Watch him work and it quickly becomes apparent this licensed contractor really knows his stuff, especially when it comes to his own personal passions: home improvement and landscaping. Cameron recently even gutted his own home and completely revamped the backyard.

Now he’s putting his extensive hands-on expertise to work for DIY Network building, landscaping, hardscaping and more.

The public is encouraged to bring any existing plans and budgets to discuss with the home and garden experts or pictures to share to maximize the idea exchange while at the show.

Tickets are just nine dollars for adults, eight dollars for seniors and five dollars for military. Kids under 12 are free. Parking is also free.

For ticket information, directions, parking and more visit www.lakeconroehomeandgardenshow.com.

Springtime in the city at Home Garden Show

BY HOLLY PRESTIDGE
Richmond Times-Dispatch

Richmond Times-Dispatch

Cooking demonstrations might not seem appropriate at a home and garden show until you stop to think about one of the fastest-growing home improvement areas — outdoor kitchens.

Plus, who doesn’t love good food?

Officials with the 11th annual MAC Events Home Garden Show (Friday through Feb. 9 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center) decided to add some flair to this year’s show by adding new elements such as food demonstrations and celebrity DIY personalities, as well as bringing back the element of spring by having blooms galore throughout the show.

Relish magazine chef and cooking show director Brian Morris will delight attendees with his fun take on popular cooking trends. Morris worked at Le Cirque 2000 and Jacques Torres Chocolates as well as served as a private cooking instructor for such clients as Derek Jeter, Nicole Kidman, Clint Black and more.

Attendees also will get opportunities to hear from and talk to hometown DIY stars John and Sherry Petersik, who write the popular blog Young House Love. The duo will give talks as well as sign copies of their books.

“We’re so excited to do a (home and garden show) in our hometown,” Sherry Petersik said by email. “We’ve done a few as far away as Portland and Tacoma, so it’ll be nice to be in our area to chat with local RVAers.”

As usual, professionals in the home improvement and landscaping industries will answer questions and offer guidance about everything from security systems and custom closets to outdoor patios and pools.

But in an effort to give the show a springtime feel, show officials said MAC Events contributed 1,000 blooms as part of the displays around the convention center.

“We’re bringing the colors and aromas of springtime to Richmond with thousands of blooms in the garden and fresh ideas,” said show manager Chris Grubbs. “It’s going to be a fun and refreshing weekend designed to lift us out of the winter blues.”

Auburn downtown plan meeting set Feb. 11

From staff reports

oanow.com

Next week, Auburn residents will have another opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions about the future of downtown.

The city is hosting the third and final meeting about the Downtown Master Plan on Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Harris Senior Center, located at 425 Perry St. Residents are encouraged to attend.

According to a statement from the city, the meeting gives residents the opportunity to help prioritize downtown projects they want to see completed first, and identify were they want to encourage certain uses in Auburn. Those attending will also be able to review the downtown plan process and the feedback that has been provided by more than 200 residents in earlier meetings.

“Serving as the connection between the city and the university, Downtown Auburn represents the city of Auburn’s historic, service and retail core,” the city states. “Since the Downtown Master Plan process began, over 200 people have attended public meetings to share their thoughts on the future of downtown Auburn. In November, over 75 people joined us to create their own personal downtown master plans, showing their ideas for how and where future development should be focused, and what types of streetscapes are desirable for different parts of downtown. The individual plans allowed city staff to better understand what residents value, how they envision the future of downtown, and how downtown improvements should be prioritized.”

“We know we can get better, and we’re striving for that,” City Manager Charlie Duggan told residents at the November meeting.

Bob Begle of Atlanta-based Urban Collage emphasized in the November meeting that downtown is “not a failing place.” Survey participants enjoy downtown’s proximity and association with Auburn University, but also expressed major concerns about parking.

“Parking is the No. 1 concern,” Begle said.

Seventy-nine percent of respondents said downtown can be improved.

Downtown’s “Main Street feel” along with sidewalk dining are considered positives to continue pursuing. So are wider sidewalks, landscaping and even pocket parks.

Respondents believe coordinated signal timing would help with traffic flow, but they do not want an additional travel lane. They also said they enjoy the special events held in downtown. Fifty-one percent of respondents would like to see more events, while only 5 percent believe there are too many.

College Street, Magnolia Avenue, Gay Street and Glenn Avenue are among areas that need attention, according to the survey. Some respondents also said the bar scene could be negatively impacting downtown.

A final plan could come before the Auburn City Council for a vote by this spring.

Astrodome plans

Whether you’re watching for the game, the commercials or the excuse to chow down on snacks, all eyes today are on the Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Have fun while you can, Houston, but we have about three years until those eyes are upon Texas, when we host the 2017 Super Bowl at Reliant Stadium. That may seem like a long time, but not nearly long enough to solve the problem of the Astrodome. Harris County needs to ensure that the Eighth Wonder of the World will serve as more than an eyesore for football fans.

Plan A fell through for the county when voters rejected a $217 million bond proposal to transform the Dome into an event space. We continue to believe that Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and his fellow commissioners bear the burden of responsibility for the plan’s failure. After all, they couldn’t provide the hard numbers that voters needed to be assured that the whole scheme was financially viable.

With plan A in the dust, Judge Emmett is quick to say that there is no plan B. There is, however, a plan C. A hasty power wash will be no difficult feat to help clean up the Dome in preparation for Super Bowl guests. But why stop there? With a little extra planning, Harris County can upgrade that plan to at least a C-plus.

Time is probably too short, and money too tight, to restore the Astrodome to any serious functionality. But the underlying architectural aesthetics and record-breaking history are still as strong as ever. A power wash, coat of paint, landscaping and maybe even hard hat tours could make the Dome a sight worth seeing. The National Park Service just added the Dome to the National Register of Historic Places – certainly that’s worth investing in a few bronze historic plaques.

With the right touches, the Dome could stand as an artistic installation for visiting crowds – or maybe just the world’s largest lawn ornament. Either way, it would be an improvement on what we have now while preserving the building for any future ideas.

We urge Emmett to appoint a task force to consider ideas and to recommend a plan that will get the Dome into shape. Rome may have its Coliseum, but somehow an Astrodome ruin doesn’t have the same cachet.

Home and garden show to feature national stars – The Virginian

HAMPTON

Beat the winter blues by planning for spring with a visit to the Hampton Roads Home Garden Show next weekend.

This year’s event, presented by the Peninsula Housing and Builders Association, features flying dogs, national home-and-garden celebrities, an interior design competition and a $10,000 garden giveaway.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. Friday and runs through Feb. 9 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

“Exhibitors will be on hand to offer recommendations that will refresh and renew the inside of your house, plus save you money, energy and improve the air quality in your home,” said Linda Jenkins, president of the Peninsula Housing Builders Association.

Chip Wade will be one of the main speakers. He has been featured on the Atlanta team of HGTV’s “Designed to Sell,” as well as that network’s “Curb Appeal: The Block,” “Showdown” and “Design Star.”

Don Engebretson, also known as the Renegade Gardener, will cover topics such as “Crafting Cool and Creative Containers” and “Top 10 Gardening Blunders – and How to Avoid Them.” The Minnesota native is a field editor, writer and garden scout for Better Homes and Gardens magazine, writes for other publications.

“Virginia is for lovers, and I love Virginia,” Engebretson said. “It will be good to be back in coastal Virginia and share my ideas with gardeners.”

This is Engebretson’s first time at the home-and-garden show, but he has made multiple appearances in the Hampton Roads area for other events. If there is time, Engebretson hopes to do “on-the-spot” landscaping consultations after some of his presentations. Attendees are asked to bring a picture of their current or potential landscape for the consultation.

Back by popular demand will be Habitat for Humanity’s ReStoration Challenge. Three local, professional interior designers will create a room using items from the Habitat ReStores in Newport News and Williamsburg.

The designers can repurpose the items by reupholstering, repainting or reconfiguring them. Each designer will have $1,000 to decorate a 10-by-14-foot room.

Janet Green, executive director for Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg, said Habitat’s ReStores focus on recycling, and the challenge will allow show attendees to see how used items can be made to look fresh again.

“We divert tons of stuff away from landfills every day,” Green said.

All items used in the redesigned rooms will be available for purchase after the show, and the proceeds will help fund Habitat’s local building projects.

In addition to the decorating and gardening events, show-goers can watch the high-flying antics and demonstrations from the pets in John Misita’s K-9s In Flight.

Show-goers from the Peninsula have a chance to win a $10,000 garden giveaway from Landscapes by Eric Bailey. The prize includes a hardscape feature, lighting, plant material, mulch and tree care, as well as outdoor furniture. Entry forms are available during the show.

Architectural students from the University of Oregon unveiled designs and enthusiasm Friday for three new fire stations in Medford.

Kiana Motahari, a 21-year-old student from Iran, said her design of Fire Station 4 at the corner of Table Rock Road and Berrydale Avenue attempted to create a comfortable living space for the firefighters.

“They call them fire stations, but in the U.S. it’s really the firemen’s house,” Motahari said. “The firemen spend so much of their time living in these buildings.”

Motahari was one of 26 students who showed off plans to city officials and firefighters at the Carnegie Library. They prepared cardboard mock-ups to show what the existing fire stations look like, along with the new design.

The students and professors Virginia Cartwright and Jim Givens have joined with the city as part of the Sustainable City Year Program.

The city has approved spending $10.6 million to rebuild or remodel three aging stations: Fire Station 2 on West Eighth Street, Fire Station 3 on Highland Avenue and Fire Station 4 on Table Rock Road.

Motahari said she was interested in listening to the firefighters to get a better idea of how to refine her drawings over the next six weeks.

Her design features a central courtyard that would act as a buffer between the public spaces in the front of the station and the living quarters in the back. The courtyard also would bring light into the center of the building.

Deputy Fire Chief Gordon Sletmoe looked over the dozens of drawings prepared by the students.

“I’m impressed for being halfway into a term,” Sletmoe said.

He said the challenge for the students is to have a better understanding of the day-to-day activities of firemen.

Some of the drawings depicted too tight of a turn radius for fire trucks. Also, the Rogue Valley climate would be too dry to support many of the students’ landscaping ideas, Sletmoe said.

Firemen perform their own landscaping, so they want to keep the upkeep to a minimum.

Sletmoe said he thinks many of the components of the drawings could be used in the final designs of the buildings.

Shikha Subramanian, a 23-year-old architectural student from the San Francisco area, said she’s worked on other projects, but was impressed by the uniqueness of designing a public building.

“This is much more than just a fire station,” she said. “This is a chance to make a difference in a community.”

Subramanian, who was designing Fire Station 4, said she wanted to build a running track behind the building for the firemen.

Her design also calls for large glass doors that would make the fire engines visible from the street.

Subramanian has been thinking about the design for a while but said she spent two nights without sleep to get it ready for the presentation.

Givens said the students were designing buildings to last more than 40 years and were looking for ideas from the local community.

“So much of what the student does is theoretical,” Givens said. “They are hoping to get practical feedback.”

Allen Chung, a 21-year-old architectural student from Portland, said he’s learned that designing a fire station is much more complex than he first thought.

“Overall, it’s been a fun project,” he said.
