Antelope Valley project ideas include garden, grocery store and townhomes

The city received four very different proposals for redeveloping six blocks near downtown Lincoln, ranging from the exotic — a botanical garden — to a super-sized version of the city’s original plan.

Mayor Chris Beutler announced in May that the city had created a land package and was looking for a creative developer to redevelop 5 to 7 acres near the Antelope Valley project, around 21st and N streets.

Three of the plans, offered by the Nov. 1 deadline, came from local developers who have previously worked with the city. One came from a nonprofit group that has been hoping to create a botanical garden in Lincoln for several years.

“These are very credible, interesting and exciting proposals,” said Wynn Hjermstad, community development manager for the Urban Development Department.

It appears that the developers have put together good development teams with a lot of experience, she said.

“They did think out of the box on what they could do to continue to enhance Antelope Valley,” she said.

“This would not be happening if we had not gotten rid of the flood plain. That is now a prime location, near downtown and adjacent to the channel.”

The land, owned by the city, the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District and Windstream, is along the redeveloped Antelope Creek channel and one block south of the new Union Plaza.

It includes the former Williamson Honda dealership, a Windstream warehouse and some city-owned land, including the historic Muni Pool bathhouse.

The city’s Urban Development Department released portions of the four proposals this week.

A 12-member selection committee picked by the mayor will review the proposals and offer its advice to the mayor, according to Hjermstad. A final proposal could be selected by early next year.

Botanical garden

Developer: Plant Oasis Group, a nonprofit affiliated with Lincoln Parks and Recreation and the Lincoln Parks Foundation.

The plan: The north half of the site would be developed as a botanical garden, serving as a center for education, conservation and recreation for the public. There would be a plant conservatory, a year-round structure for rare and exotic plants.

The historic Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph building would be rehabilitated for accessory uses to the conservatory, including administrative offices, public meeting and conference rooms, a café, gift shop, library and classrooms.

The Windstream building’s second floor would be considered for mixed use lease space, for office, retail and public meetings.

The bathhouse would be converted into an event building available for rentals and use by the botanical garden.

The site would include two parking lots and would tie into Antelope Valley, the Sunken Gardens and the Children’s Zoo via Capital Parkway and the bike trail.

Funding: Estimates of $10 million to $20 million are very preliminary, said Hjermstad. The group indicates it would have a fund drive.

Lincoln Town Center Redevelopment

Developers: Team includes Ridge Development, ZSA Realty Group LLC, BVH Architects, Brager Construction Company, Olsson Associates, Seacrest and Kalkowski law firm and Pinnacle Bank.

The plan: This team would like to expand beyond the 5.2 acres owned by the city, incorporating another 18 acres to create a much larger redevelopment district that would be developed over a longer time period.

The developer is proposing a mixed-use urban district “that can set the tone for the entire area and maximize the public’s Antelope Valley investment.”

The plan is fairly general but would combine different forms of residential living units with retail and office space. It also would coordinate design, materials, lighting and landscaping within the area.

Funding: Very preliminary estimates indicate there would be around $67 million in private investment with $6 million of city funding through tax increment financing, said Hjermstad.

21st N Street Redevelopment

Developers: Hoppe Brothers LLC, Hoppe Homes LP and Meadowgreen LLC.

The plan: A mixed use project with retail, including a grocery store; homes and moderate income housing.

It would include a three-story building with 10,800 square feet of retail and commercial space on the ground level and 24 two-bedroom apartments on the upper levels.

The developers intend that a restaurant would be located in the east side of the building with patio dining overlooking Antelope Creek.

The developers also are proposing construction of 64 three-story row houses, sold to market-rate buyers. Each row house would have a two-stall garage. The row houses would be three bedroom units or come with two bedrooms with a den.

The developer plans to renovate the telephone company warehouse into 34 apartments and construct an additional 32 units in a separate building. These apartments would be designated for people with incomes less than 60 percent of the median income and 22 units would be designated for people with severe mental illness. There would be space for a caseworker from CenterPointe Inc. to provide support services.

The proposal includes construction of a 32,000-foot grocery store on the block between 19th and 20th, K to L.

Funding: An estimated $25.9 million in private investment would be combined with about $4.5 million in TIF funding.

Brookside

Developer: Brookside Partners include Concorde Management Development and Tallgrass Development.

The plan: The project would include five apartment buildings, each with 22 apartments on three levels, using the land owned by the city and the Lower Platte Natural Resources District, but not the telephone company warehouse.

The upscale apartments, with a range of sizes and configurations, would be designed to appeal to families, young professionals and empty nesters.

Plans also include an outdoor community center with a play structure, shelter and fireplace, and an indoor community center.

The poolhouse would be retained for city offices.

Funding: Developers estimate about $10 million in private investment and $900,000 in TIF funding.

Tips for protecting your garden

Windy conditions and warmer days mean the soil is drying and your garden will start changing in its needs and water demands.

Here are the essential things you should focus on to keep the good start to the growing season on track.

1. With some strong winds recently you are probably aware of trees and shrubs that are a bit gangly and misshapen. This is a good time to trim to shape. Reducing the length of long branches reduces the risk of them breaking and damaging the garden and your plants.

2. Start looking for dry patches in the garden. Any exposed sands will become water-repellent very quickly once baked in the sun, and applying a wetting agent after a thick layer of mulch is important.

3. One thing you can do to tackle dry patches is to change the way water moves through your soil. The application of clay now is going to convert sand into a loam-like structure and once amended it changes the soil forever. The top 20-30cm is the critical zone for plant-feeding roots and this is the area where you want to slow water movement, allowing plants’ roots more time to absorb the moisture and not see it run below their catchment area and end up wasted. In a recent trial at home I’ve discovered not all clays are the same and I am now strongly focused on kaolin clays in sandy soils. Bentonite clay particles rise to the surface and don’t bind soil together. They are highly absorbent, but the moisture is being lost to evaporation from my experience to date.

There were a few people who took one look at the naturalistic meadow plantings
of my Chelsea garden earlier this year and quipped “well, that’s what
happens if I let my lawn go”. However, the reality is that creating the rich
tapestry of naturalistic planting requires a lot of planning as well as a
new set of compositional rules.

It begins with the careful study of natural habitats. I love to do this on
walking holidays, but if that’s not possible I find myself spending long
hours on the internet looking at amazing photographs of wild plant
communities. I am looking for plants that like to grow together, and in what
conditions. I also look at the pattern and distribution of different species
in their natural setting. A good garden designer needs to be a visual
sponge.

When it comes to selecting plants, there are a few basic rules to consider.
Ecological compatibility is vital, which means choosing plants that suit the
conditions but will also work well as a community. Again, the easiest way to
make the right decisions is to take cues from what you observe growing in
nature.

Then I draw cross-sections of my planting schemes. Simple squiggles will do,
representing a simplification of the main plant forms: umbels, spires,
button-like dots and low, mounded hummocks. Use tracing paper or layers of
greaseproof paper for this. Always draw to the same scale so you can see how
different layers will combine and interact visually. Refer to a nursery
catalogue for information on the height and spread of the plants when they
reach maturity.

The purpose of these sketches is to test your planting scheme to make sure you
have enough variety in contrasting plant forms. This is the key to an
interesting composition.

A strong rhythm

To simplify things, I build up my planting schemes in three vertical layers,
starting with the lowest. Short plants (less than 12in/30cm) should form the
base of the planting scheme (around 40-50 per cent of the mix), and I tend
to choose plants that naturally form low hummocks.

The middle layer (approximately 12in-40in/30cm-100cm, around 40 per cent of
the mix) often contains plants with a long flowering season. Finally, I
choose two to three species that will emerge through this tapestry, the
taller the better (40in/100cm or more, approximately 10 per cent or less of
the mix). I rely on these plants to bring a strong rhythm to the scheme and
so I usually place these first so that I can see their distribution clearly.
The lower two layers are planted at random among them. Random doesn’t mean
the distribution lacks any kind of pattern or regularity: there will be
clumps of certain species, just as there are in nature.

A planting scheme like this is a radical departure from the classic,
hierarchical scheme that gives each plant its own place in the sun.
Intermingled plantings require more careful plant selection to ensure enough
sunlight can penetrate to the lowest levels. This means choosing plants for
the middle and upper layers that have near-leafless stems (see Tips, right),
avoiding taller plants with a thick canopy of leaves. If you want to achieve
a really natural effect you have to embrace the dynamic nature of plant
communities. The balance of species will change from year to year, just as
it does in a grassland meadow.

Beautiful wild places

If all this seems like three-dimensional chess, the best thing to do is to pay
a visit to a garden where you can see this kind of planting for yourself.

The Phoenix Garden in London’s West End (reopening early in 2013) is a small
garden that champions ecological principles on a small scale with plenty of
colours and habitat-rich plantings. James Hitchmough’s exotic meadow at RHS
Wisley is a long-flowering spectacle of colour. Keith Wiley is another
daring plantsman I admire for his work at the Garden House in north Devon
and his new Wildside nursery is just down the road.

Cassian Schmidt’s gardens at Hermannshof in south-west Germany were important
influences on our planting strategy for the Olympic Park. It was pouring
with rain when I visited, yet the rich golden yellows of Solidago caesia
‘Goldbandrute’, Helianthus occidentalis and the purple aster
novi-belgii, as well as the towering scale of the planting, created a
lasting impression.

This approach to planting design isn’t for everyone, nor is it right for every
garden. There’s still a place for the more traditional approach. But if what
you want from your garden is a reconnection with beautiful wild places, you
have to take on a different approach to design. It may require some
experimentation, but you can rest assured that you’ll be joining a small but
growing number of pioneers in this new wave of “gardening in the round”.

How to use plants in three vertical layers

• Use plants with low hummock forms for the lowest layer.
Heuchera villosa
is shade-tolerant, making it particularly useful as a
ground-layer plant that won’t mind a little shading from the taller plants.
It is very architectural, with long- lasting, creamy flower spikes. In the
Olympic Park’s North American garden it has been planted to spectacular
effect in among the bright yellow flowers of the low-growing Coreopsis
verticillata
‘Zagreb’. Aster divaricatus would work equally
well. Primula veris and Primula vulgaris are other
shade-tolerant options, perfect for a hedgerow or woodland-edge-inspired
area of planting.

If you’re looking to create a scheme inspired by dry meadow or steppes, Dianthus
carthusianorum
would be perfect as a low-layer species. It is very
long-flowering and its low mound of grassy foliage is evergreen. Try it
alongside Pulsatilla vulgaris.

• For the middle layer, use plants with a long season of interest
that have a relatively upright form. Sanguisorbas are invaluable for their
airy structure and elongated tassel or button-like flowers. For a scheme
inspired by British moist meadows, try Sanguisorba officinalis, Lythrum
virgatum
‘Dropmore Purple’, Succisa pratensis and Centaurea
nigra
(otherwise known as devil’s bit scabious and common knapweed).

If you have a free-draining soil in a sunny situation, Achillea ‘Credo’,
Achnatherum calamagrostis, Liatris spicata ‘Alba’, Eryngium
bourgatii
, Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ and Salvia nemorosa would all
suit.

• For the upper layer, use tall upright species with near
leafless stems. Rudbeckia maxima creates a vibrant composition when
planted with Verbena bonariensis and/or the less well known Verbena
hastata
. Coreopsis tripteris is equally tall and airy with single
yellow daisies on a profusion of wiry stems. The molinia grasses are well
known for their upright, near transparent flower stems; try Molinia
caerulea
‘Karl Foerster’ or the even taller ‘Skyracer’. Calamagrostis
x acutiflora
‘Karl Foerster’ always stands upright, as does the less
well known North American prairie grass Andropogon gerardii.

Top tips

Lack of leaves

This is important for the middle and tallest emergent layers. Sunlight needs
to penetrate through the different layers of planting.

A transparent form does not mean that it lacks vigour; look at the towering
clear stems of Silphium terebinthinaceum, or at the plumes of Molinia
caerulea
‘Transparent’ and the persistence of our native meadow
buttercup, Ranunculus acris.

Ecological compatibility

Take the lead from a plant community that you are familiar with, for example
what you see along a woodland edge in Britain in spring. Consider growth
rates – will one plant become dominant and eliminate the slower-growing
species? Match the chosen plant palette to your soil and to the growing
conditions.

Variety of shapes

Contrasting plant shapes create an interesting composition (and also promotes
a richer habitat).

Long season

Select mainstay theme plants that will carry the scheme through the seasons
and choose plants that have interesting seed heads after flowering.

Planting density

Increasing the planting density reduces the likelihood of weed invasion. If
you were to plant nine 1 litre plants per square metre in spring, by early
summer there would be no bare soil showing, allowing little opportunity for
airborne seeds to take hold.

Look at wild plants

Plantlife (plantlife.org.uk)
is a charity that speaks up for the nation’s wild plants and which has 23
nature reserves across Britain. In spring and summer, all of their reserves
are open to the public. Here you can find a rich source of inspiration in
important wild plant habitats such as hay meadows, chalk grassland,
limestone pavement and culm grassland.

Ann Stookey, floral designer

Ann Stookey, 60, formerly of Chestnut Hill, an award-winning floral designer, died Nov. 6 in Paris after suffering a brain hemorrhage while vacationing with her husband, Joe Waz.

The couple had been living in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles since 2011 when her husband retired as an executive with the Comcast Corp. They had been traveling with friends in Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Italy and France.

While living in Chestnut Hill, Ms. Stookey became an active gardener and floral designer, winning awards at the Philadelphia Flower Show and becoming an accredited judge of floral design. The “green garden” she created at the family’s residence in Chestnut Hill was featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer and magazine and online spreads, and has been recorded in the Smithsonian Institution’s Archive of American Gardens.

An active volunteer, she chaired various charitable events at Germantown Friends School and Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, among other institutions. With her husband, she co-chaired the Parents Leadership Council of Emerson College in 2007-08.

Ms. Stookey also was an accomplished choral singer and was a member of church choirs at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chestnut Hill, Grace Episcopal Church in Silver Spring, Md., and All Saints Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills, Calif.

She and her husband met in 1979 when both were working for the National Citizens Committee for Broadcasting, an organization chaired by Ralph Nader. During her years in the Washington area, she worked in various capacities at National Public Radio, the Public Broadcasting System, and related institutions.

She was a member of the Wissahickon Garden Club of Philadelphia, a member of the Philadelphia Aviation Country Club, and a former member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club.  She was an avid traveler.

In addition to her husband, Ms. Stookey is survived by a son, Jack Waz, of Los Angeles; her mother, Martha Ann Stookey, of Texas; brothers Steve, of Doylestown, and Robert, of Minturn, Colo.

A celebration of Ms. Stookey’s life was held Nov. 10 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chestnut Hill. Memorial funds in her name will be established to support the arts of music and floral design in Philadelphia and Los Angeles. – WF

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Project Achieves Net-Zero Energy Use Status …

/PRNewswire/ — The Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Bosarge Family Education Center, a LEED Platinum certified facility located in Boothbay, Maine, has achieved confirmation of Net-Zero Energy status after a year of operation. The Education Center is recognized as one of only a handful of Net-Zero, non-residential buildings in New England, and is the second commercial LEED Platinum building in Maine.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a Net-Zero building is a structure with zero net energy consumption and zero carbon emissions annually. After a year of operation, an analysis of the property’s performance has confirmed that the Center is producing almost 30% more energy than it is using, and the excess energy produced is being used to supplement other power needs at the Gardens. Only a few select commercial projects nationwide achieve this distinction annually and the Center is the first non-residential development in Maine to achieve Net-Zero Energy status.

The new Center highlights the remarkable growth of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, which opened in 2007, on 128 acres of forest and tidal frontage. The Gardens attracted about 40,000 visitors the first year. Since then it has expanded to 248 acres, becoming the largest botanical garden in New England and one of Maine’s top tourist attractions. Today it hosts about 100,000 visitors annually.

This fast-growing popularity caused Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens to quickly outgrow its visitor center, prompting the decision to build the education center. At the facility’s opening in the summer of 2011, the 8,000-square-foot Education Center was hailed as the “greenest building in Maine.” This building stands at the next frontier of building design, going beyond LEED standards to achieve much greater energy savings and reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

The building enclosure is at least a foot thick. Designed and specified by Maclay Architects of Waitsfield, VT, this innovative enclosure design achieves an impressive efficiency rating of R-40 in the walls and R-60 in the roof. Special triple-glazed windows, among the most efficient windows that can be bought in the U.S., allow for passive solar gain in the winter, while keeping out the heat in the summer. In addition, a recent energy audit of air leakage concluded that air infiltration at the facility is by far the lowest in the state. All these factors combined allow for a building with incredibly low energy consumption, before renewables are even factored into the mix.

To produce the energy required to achieve Net-Zero status, 135 photovoltaic panels are mounted on the south-facing roof, and an additional 102-panel array is located in an open field nearby. Altogether this solar installation generated 55,184 kWh last year. Payback for the solar system is estimated at 10 years.

The structure was a collaborative effort of integrated design and construction that included Portland-based Fore Solutions, the green building consulting company acquired by Thornton Tomasetti in 2012, which served as the project’s green building consultant. Their work also includes Maine’s only other LEED Platinum commercial building, the Augusta Hannaford supermarket.

The design was led by a collaboration between Maclay Architects and Portland, Maine-based Scott Simons Architects. Maclay Architects, a widely-recognized leader in sustainable and Net-Zero design, has completed 10 Net-Zero or Net-Zero ready projects ranging from 3,000 to 75,000 square feet. Scott Simons Architects has been recognized nationally for innovative design.

In addition, Allied Engineering, also of Portland, collaborated with Energy Balance of Montpelier, VT to design and engineer the mechanical and electrical systems, which include a massive array of on-site solar photovoltaic electricity generation capable of generating 55,184 kilowatt hours.

H. P. Cummings of Winthrop, Maine was the construction manager on the project. Becker Structural Engineers provided structural design services for the project. Bensonwood, of Walpole, New Hampshire, builders of high performance houses and commercial structures, produced and installed the super-insulated, tightly-sealed building shell.  To reduce waste and minimize disruption to the build site, Bensonwood fabricated the panelized construction assemblies off-site at their NH facilities, and assembled them rapidly on-site at the Gardens.  Bensonwood’s off-site fabrication techniques enabled the building to be rapidly assembled on-site during the winter months while ensuring the highest building performance standards.

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens has been praised widely, receiving accolades from the Maine Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Katye Charette, who commented “Healthy, high performance buildings like the Bosarge Family Education Center are key to creating a sustainable built environment in Maine.”

Funding for the project came from the Bosarge Family Foundation, which was so impressed by the plans for the Education Center that it donated $2 million, including a $1.5 million matching challenge, which the Gardens not only met but exceeded. The total cost for the Center and its all-native landscape is $4.2 million.

Atlanta advances array of storm water management options as state focuses its …

As the state moves ahead with plans to build water reservoirs, Atlanta is proceeding with efforts to make better use of rainwater that falls over the city.

On Nov. 27, if all goes as planned, the city’s long-awaited proposal to improve the management of storm water is to get its first hearing by the Utilities Committee of the Atlanta City Council. Advocates hope the council will enact it early next year and Mayor Kasim Reed will sign the legislation.

In addition, lots of blue sky ideas emerged after a presentation by Denise Quarles, Atlanta’s sustainability director, at last week’s meeting of SERHAS – including this one from Leon Eplan, the city’s long-retired planning commission: Why not catch storm water that runs off Ga. 400, south of the tollgates, and use it to irrigate the new plantings along Peachtree Road?

“What better demonstration project could there be than the state doing it, itself?” Eplan remarked after the quarterly meeting of SERHAS – Southeast Rainwater Harvesting Systems Association. “The water’s clean, and could be piped into a system for irrigation for the beautiful landscaping that’s been installed.”

Another enthusiast has a similar idea for catching the storm water that runs off the parking lot in the Midtown Place shopping center, located across Ponce de Leon Avenue from the planned Ponce City Market development. He had no time to elaborate because he was working swiftly to find someone from Home Depot – an anchor tenant at Midtown Place – for a discussion as the crowd headed for the door.

Georgia, meanwhile, is pursuing a plan to meet Georgia’s water needs through construction of new reservoirs. The Metro Atlanta Chamber has endorsed Gov. Nathan Deal’s concept of reservoirs; Deal’s plan is for the state to contribute $300 million over the course of four years toward the development of reservoirs in Georgia.

The ideas of harvesting storm water off highways and big parking lots, offered by Eplan and others, are broader than the current focus of SERHAS. The non-profit is working toward greater use of rain barrels by homeowners as an achievable first step in wide-spread adoption of rainwater harvesting systems.

An example of that exists in Tucson. The city government there has implemented a cash award of $300 for homeowners who install a rainwater harvesting system. The program has been embraced so heartily that related workshops for interested homeowners are booked full through the year.

Atlanta doesn’t offer a cash award, but did enact legislation in 2011 that aims to clarify the city’s codes on rainwater harvesting. The new code created a fee and regulations for the collection of potable rainwater. Part of the goal was to allow for the unfettered use of rain barrel systems, advocates said at the time.

But few – if any – homeowners have jumped on the bandwagon.

Quarles’ PowerPoint presentation observed that: “Stakeholders have yet to take advantage of it. A campaign is now needed to educate and engage.”

That’s where the SERHAS campaign comes into play.

The objective of the current campaign is to boost the rate at which rainwater harvesting systems are adopted. The stated challenge is: “It’s been achieved elsewhere … why not here?” Success is defined as: “ Public awareness; Government policy; Standards to assure reliable systems.”

The city’s proposed post-development storm water management ordinance fits into the category of “government policy.” The proposal has been in the works for a few years, and the current version has been drafted with input from the development community.

The latest version of the plan is dated Oct. 3 and includes a number of refinements. The ordinance would apply to both commercial and residential properties.

Starting a small business can be daunting, especially for a first-time entrepreneur. Turning a great idea into reality takes endless drive and commitment, but those qualities alone are not enough to assure success. Tasks like budgeting, hiring and marketing may not sound exciting, but the better — and more realistic — the planning, the more likely the road to prosperity.

Getting help with those important details can take at least some of the drama out of a startup and free up time that can be devoted to other tasks. Some local business owners found that aid at the Small Business Development Center, and are glad they did.

“Working with the SDDC was a great experience,” said Ivan Davidowitz, owner of Arch Comfort in Kingston. “We used them to help launch our business.”

Davidowitz wasn’t new to the business world, but he had no experience in retail.

“We were already well on our way” to opening the specialty shoe store when he was referred to the SBDC, but needed a business plan to get bank financing.

“It wasn’t just that we went in and had one meeting,” Davidowitz said. “They walked us through it; they coached us,” and when they were done a bank said yes.

Chastity and Mike Krakosky had no business experience, but were customers of consignment shops where they brought their three boys’ used clothes to sell. They liked the concept but not some of the stores, which tended to be messy.

“We want to be more like a department store than a consignment store,” only accepting good quality, “lightly used” items and keeping the shop clean and neat, Mike Krakosky said Thursday while taking care of the children at home.

When he saw a “for rent” sign in a storefront at 1841 Wyoming Ave. in Exeter in late June, it was time to get serious. Chastity asked state Rep. Phyllis Mundy’s staff about small business support and she was referred to the SBDC at Wilkes University.

Cooperation is key

That’s a prime source of leads, said Ed Kowalczyk, assistant director at the Wilkes SBDC office.

“We don’t have a large marketing budget; in fact it’s pretty much zero,” Kowalczyk said. So they get the word out on their services to banks, business organizations and legislators’ offices, “so we have a strong referral base.”

Kowalczyk also keeps the office and its work visible by sending a steady stream of media announcements about openings.

SBDC support runs from the very basic “First Step” class most new entrepreneurs are required to attend, to budgeting and even evaluations of potential energy savings.

The local office is one of 18 in Pennsylvania affiliated with colleges and universities. The Wilkes center’s three full-time and three part-time business consultants serve Luzerne, Carbon, Columbia, Sullivan and Schuylkill counties. All services are free, with the SBDC system in Pennsylvania financially supported by the federal Small Business Administration, the state Department of Community and Economic Development and Wilkes.

“We have three different bosses,” Kowalczyk joked.

They also are measured on reaching goals established by the SBA, which include helping get 35 new businesses started each year, sales growth by clients and the number of jobs created or retained. While those are routinely met or passed, Kowalczyk said, another measure, helping clients obtain $5 million a year in financing, has been tougher to hit, “because we try to get them to not borrow so much.”

The university affiliation helps both clients and students. Ruth Hughes, director of the center, teaches at Wilkes; “The advantage is we bring students in to help clients,” Kowalczyk said, working on marketing plans, business strategy or even helping to identify potential energy savings. “The students get the benefit of the experience.”

Clients can be either startups or existing small businesses that fit guidelines established by the SBA. The largest business Kowalczyk has worked with is a manufacturer that does about $1.5 million in annual sales and has 15 employees. The smallest are “mom and pops,” like the Krakoskys’ Lolliposh Clothing Gifts, he said.

Some of the most recent existing business clients have been former startups that were damaged in last year’s flooding, such as Janet’s Total Appearance Salon in Shickshinny and Sugar Artists Emporium in Plains Township.

Switching sides one day

Kowalczyk, 39, got firsthand business experience when he and his brother started a landscaping service in Dupont. “He’s still doing well,” he said about the business, Mark’s Landscaping.

He started working part time at the SBDC office while a student at Wilkes in the mid-1990s and was hired full time in 1997 after earning his MBA.

For now, Kowalczyk is happy to trade the prospect of higher pay in the private sector for the satisfaction of helping others.

“The best part is you’re out there helping people who need it; they have dreams they want to pursue,” he said.

Mike Krakosky says the SBDC helped him and Chastity follow their dreams.

“If not for that seminar and the materials I think we would have had a rougher time starting up. It was actually more helpful than I thought it was going to be,” he said.

Still, Kowalczyk says the temptation to follow in clients’ footsteps is real. “I examined a couple of ideas; I just haven’t taken that jump yet. One day I’ll do it,” he said.

That will put him in company with Tom Healey, who helped Arch Comfort get its start in 2010. After many years as a senior business consultant, he left the SBDC in August to open Big T’s Coney Island Deli on South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre.

Hesitant parents warm up to idea of their children going into trades

EDMONTON – What do you want to be when you grow up is a question that’s asked frequently from a young age. Quite often the answer says more about the parents’ aspirations than anything else; that is, a push to the academic world, with no thought to a career in the trades.

Tom Welling of Calgary said he had “great ideas� of his son Colin going to university. The possibility of a trade entered the picture when an automotive teacher asked Welling and his wife if they knew about the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

“We had no idea (about RAP),� Tom Welling said.

The teacher explained the program and the parents talked to their son, who had heard about RAP, but wasn’t sure if it was for him. After thinking it over, Colin applied to train as an auto-service technician and was accepted shortly before finishing Grade 11.

Shortly into summer break, he got a call from his RAP supervisor who had lined up a job for him at ULS Maintenance Landscaping Inc. Colin put in 10-hour days working on the company’s large fleet of vehicles — and enjoyed it. Back in school, he kept up his automotive theory work and passed the written exams in January. The landscaping company wanted him back, so after completing Grade 12 this spring, the 18-year-old returned to his former workplace, until his next school session at SAIT in Calgary.

“It’s been a brilliant program for him,� Tom Welling said.

May Picardo of Drayton Valley is equally enthusiastic about the 4th class power engineering pathway and mentorship program her son, Daniel Meadwell, 16, is taking, while earning his high-school diploma. Being university educated herself, she expected Daniel to follow in her footsteps, and because he is strong academically, she was thinking more along the lines of business or medical school.

At an information night she learned about RAP’s stringent requirements and the opportunities and changed her mind. She was “initially hesitant, but now I would rave about what he’s doing.�

Her reluctance sprang from the heavy workload Daniel would be undertaking.

However, he’s doing well in school and in the apprenticeship program, as well as participating in sports and volunteer work in the community.

Now in Grade 11, Daniel started the program in Grade 10 via computer from school. Last summer, he worked at Drayton Valley Power, where he gained excellent hands-on experience while accumulating the required work hours to continue with the program.

As of January, he is registered at NAIT and Frank Maddock High School. When he graduates from Grade 12, he will have his 4th class power engineering certificate as well as his high-school diploma – “a workable diploma,� Picardo said.

He can then take courses to upgrade his trade certificate, and branch out to business and management opportunities at a young age.

“What a fantastic start for a high-school student,� Picardo said, and if he decides to go to university, he will have a backup career.

Whatever lies ahead, the trade he’s pursuing is a career, not a job, she stressed, and one that’s in demand.

Twinkle’s Garden | Winter bulb storage

Winter is on its way and now is the time to harvest those bulbs that might not withstand colder temps in the coming months.

Not every bulb needs to be plucked from the earth, and most likely, unless you are a meticulously organized gardener, you might not remember exactly where every bulb was planted this year.

Still, to keep your bulbs from freezing so you can replant in the spring, dig them up and store them until the conditions are right to head back out in the yard.

Basically most flowering bulbs should be dug up and stored, especially if you are in zones 7-8 or above. If it’s warm enough in the more southerly climes to produce flowers all year, leaving them in the ground is OK. But if you want better blooms, storing them will help a great deal.

Where do I start?

Dig out your bulbs, or if you haven’t planted them, remove from dirt and let the bulbs, rhizomes or corms dry out.

Dust off any dirt with a dry cloth, and avoid rinsing so there is no added moisture.

Place in dry containers with holes punched in, layered with cotton cloth or newspapers.

Do not store in air-tight containers. This could cause moisture to collect and aid in fungal growth, rotting your bulbs.

Where is the best place to store them?

You can store them in a dry, unheated basement, if you are certain it is free from moisture.
Sometimes, depending on your location, the garage is a perfect place, tucked out of the way and out of direct sunlight.

If you have room, placing them in the dry storage drawer of your refrigerator is a great place to trick your bulbs into dormancy.

Don’t forget!

Label, label, label! Make sure you label your bulbs so you’ll know what they are come springtime.

Make sure you check on your bulbs several times during the winter. A calendar reminder would be the perfect way to remember.

Throw away any shriveled bulbs you find, and remove any packing material that is rotten or moldy. If there are bad spots or rotting, carefully remove with a paring knife.
If your bulbs begin to wrinkle or look shrunken, mist the packing material lightly with a little bit of water.

What happens after winter?

Make sure to get ready to plant as soon as the ground thaws to get the best results from these moody bulbs. As long as you take good care, these bulbs will multiply and you’ll be able to dig them up, store and reuse every spring.
